01. INTRODUCTION

To start, I should mention that we are a tight newsgroup and we do not put up with any garbage! We have high quality games posted, and some of the best re-posters in the business

WE DO NOT TOLERATE FLAMING!

We do not flame newbies for asking questions. However we may politely point you to either this FAQ, or one of the other information posts that we put up on a regular basis. The point is, you have to at least try to do your own homework!

WE WANT ONLY QUALITY PEOPLE ON THIS NEWS GROUP.
IF YOU STAY WITH US, YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN.

02. THE NEWBIE STARTER KIT

Q. What is the Newbie Starter Kit, and how do I get a copy?
A. The NSK is an archive containing several very informative text files and the utilities that you will need to work with the binary files found here and on other binary groups. The NSK is an exe file. However it does not install anything onto your computer.

AS WITH ANYTHING ELSE YOU DOWNLOAD, BE SURE THAT YOU SCAN IT WITH AN UP TO DATE ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM!!

It is a self extracting archive. Once extracted, you decide which of the programs you want to install. The senior members of ABGAdult put it together as a cooperative effort in order to help bring our newer members up to speed quickly and safely. Yes to start with us, you are expected to do a fair amount of reading, but the wealth of information you will receive is well worth the investment of a few moments of your time. If you would like a copy, PLEASE FIRST CHECK THE GROUP to see if it has been posted recently. If you do not see it, just ask **(see 05 KISS)** and one of our regulars will post it for you just as soon as he can.

03. GENERAL GUIDELINES

Q. What is rule #1?
A. Lurk, watch and read all of the text files including this FAQ several times. Learn a little before you try to jump in. If you are new here, this will require a certain amount of restraint. Just sit back, relax and pay attention. The guidelines are for the benifit of all. Most of all, you must learn to be patient. WAREZ ARE NOT AVAILABLE UPON DEMAND!!

Q. What is rule #2?
A. Get a well connected server. Not only will this benifit you (because you will be able to get complete posts) it will also benefit the group because you will have fewer repost requests. How good is your server? If you are missing more than 10% or so of a multi-part message, NOT GOOD! Local ISP's have notoriously bad servers. You have two upgrade paths.
(1) Get a new ISP with a well connected news server. (for dial up users, ATT Worldnet has one of the best news servers I have seen.)
(2) Get a stand alone subscription to another news server. Whatever you have to do or spend will be well worth it in the end. Some of the better News Servers are:
(1) Altopia / Altnet (2) Newscene (3) Supernews

Q: What is rule #3
A: BE PATIENT! The point is that, if you do not follow the FAQ, no one has to be patient with you.

04. THE 48 HOUR RULE

Q: How long should I wait before either requesting a repost, or filling a repost request?
A: At least 48 hours AFTER THE FULL POST IS FINISHED. Some servers receive the posts in a slower fashion than others do. It can take several days before a post makes it's way to all of the servers and we are trying to keep duplicate posts down to the bare minimum. In the case of a multiple CD post, you may post requests or do fills for requests 48 hrs. after the entire CD has been posted.

05. THE K.I.S.S. FORMAT

Q: What exactly is the K.I.S.S format, and why should I KISS it?
(or what is the best way to get someone to post the files that I need?)
A: Wondering why your files are NOT being posted? Please put your requests into the *KISS* format and they will be filled.

K.I.S.S. = Keep It Short and Simple ;)

Your request should look EXACTLY like this, nothing else will do. NO thanks or TIA, NOTHING!!

REQ: LSL5.r02
Or
REQ: Dream.r07
Or
req. newbie starter kit

1 file = 1 header or post
Nothing else! No TIA, Please or what ever! Leave the body BLANK!! if possible. Some servers will not accept a totally empty body. In that case, leave your sig. line, the poster will not open it anyway.

Or if you need files that run in numerical order, you may place a request of up to ten files in one header.
[AS an example let's say that you need Dream r00 - r09. Your request should look exactly like this!]

req Dream r00 - r09
Or
req Dream r00 thru r09

Do not put more than 10 in that request. If you need 15 or more make 2 requests of from 5 to 10 each. At best, only the first 10 will be posted and the rest will be canceled so you will have to redo your request anyway, do it right the first time. ALL others will be ignored or deleted.
The K.I.S.S. format is the standard on this group for several reasons. First it makes it MUCH easier for our main re-posters (the people who do 80% - 90% of the fills) to see what you are asking for and which requests still need attention. Secondly it helps to prevent a lot of duplicate files from being posted. Third if you sort by header, all of the requests, and the fills for those request will come up together, in numerical order. This way you can tell at a glance what is there, and anyone else who happens to need that file can get it from the same request. For this reason, we ask you to please check the headers before you place a request. If by chance you want to thank the posters for doing your fills, please do so in a separate message. Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated by ALL the Posters!

06. HOW TO POST

Q: What is the proper way to post?
A: Start small. Maybe doing a single repost for someone.
PLEASE DO NOT PERSONALIZE YOUR POSTS. Lets say that yardbird wanted dream r00 - r09, his request would look just like this. "req dream r00 - r09" and my response to it would look just like this, "re req dream r00 - r09 r00. Then r01-r09 would show as separate responses. This way it is easy for YB and everyone else to find these fills. If instead I used a header like this-

(Attn YARDBIRD here are the files that you needed, would you please post mine.)

Well that header works great for Yardbird, but it is totally useless to everyone else! I even screwed myself, because I just eliminated everyone else on the group as a possible source for the files that I want. Just like thanking someone for doing your fills, please use a separate message to flag someone's attention. Also when doing multiple fills, PLEASE DO NOT POST THEM AS A DIGEST. A digest is only useful to the one person who needed all of those files. Please post fills as individual files so everyone can use them. After you have posted a file, please check to see that it came through OK.

OK, so you have been doing fills for others, and now you want to do more. You believe that you are ready to post one of your own games. That's GREAT!!! If you are new to posting, it is highly recommended that you read Zipper's "Posting for Dummies". Please remember the following guidelines for our group.
1st. A few days before you plan on starting your post, you should post a message to the group letting everyone know what you have planned.
2nd. File size should be 1.44 meg.
3rd. Post no more than 25 - 50 files a day. (If there are no other ongoing posts, 50 files are fine, however if there are other posts in progress plan on about 25 files a day. This way everyone will have a chance to take advantage of your generosity.)
4th. Post your sfv and your nfo files everyday.
5th. HAVE FUN!!!

07. WHAT TO POST

Q: What type of adult games should be posted?
A: This group is focused on adult games for the IBM-PC computer. Mac games are not to be posted. They have a newsgroup of which to post Mac games. Alt.binaries.mac.games.adult Hybrid games [Those which run on IBM and Mac] are OK. Anime / Hentai games are OK as long, as they are English versions, and/or don't require a special operating system like Win 3x, etc. Text based adult games are OK.
Older adult games are OK as long as the necessary operating system [i.e. Win 3.1, Dos] is put in the subject line.]

08. WHAT NOT TO POST!!

Q: What type of adult games should not be posted?
A: Any game that IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM CONTAINS THE INVOLVEMENT OF A MODEL, CHARACHTER OR OPPONENT THAT IS UNDER THE AGE OF 18.
This is Strictly forbidden so DO NOT even think about it. A letter will be sent to your ISP informing them of your posting!

9. SHAREWARE OR FREEWARE

Q: Should I post shareware or freeware?
A: NO. Shareware posting is inappropriate, unless the version you have is cracked or otherwise unavailable to the general public.
[INSTEAD PLEASE JUST POST A LINK TO THEIR DOWNLOAD SITE.]

10. GAME POSTING

Q: Should I post games?
A: YES. Provided that they are not shareware or freeware and are adult in nature.

11. ADULT PICS. SOUNDS STORIES OR MOVIES

Q: Should I post Adult pics, sounds, stories, or movies?
A: Not, unless they are in direct relation to an adult game which has already been posted or is about to be posted. There are specific newsgroups for those purposes, so take it there. This group is about adult interactivity programs. If you are not sure, PLEASE ask the group before posting.

12. AGE RESTRICTIONS

Q: I am under 18 years old, is it still OK to download these games?
A: NO!!!!!!
By downloading the games from Alt.binaries.games.adult you are certifying that you are of legal age where you live. That you have checked to be sure that there are no local laws or ordinances that make downloading these files illegal. It is up to you to know your local laws. We the posters are not liable! If you violate any law or ordinance, you agree to hold the members of alt.binaries.games.adult. and their respective ISPs harmless.

13. FLOODING

Q: If I only have parts of a program, should I post what I have with a request for the rest?
A: NO! This is called FLOODING and it will quickly get you into trouble with the entire group. That is unless the files that you have were downloaded from this group, and someone else is requesting those specific files.

14. INSTALLING YOUR GAMES

Q: Can I ask for installation help?
A: First read any information files contained in the program zips. These are generally nfo (info) files, but may be txt or doc. If it still won't run, ask your question. Most of the readers are willing to offer help and advice on installation or any other relevant topic.

15. NEWBIE QUESTIONS

Q: Should I worry about being embarrassed for asking a newbie question?
A: No. So long as you have read this FAQ, most folks are willing to answer questions not covered here. Everyone here was a newbie once. Most regulars in these groups are genuinely interested in giving others a helping hand. Not every answer can be put into a FAQ; only the most frequently asked questions are intended to be here.

16. E-MAIL

Q: Should I request that someone e-mail files to me?
A: NO. Think about this one for a minute. Is your e-mailbox even large enough to hold the program? If not, it will be returned to the sender, taking him just as long to get it back from you as he did to send it. Why should anyone do this anyway? It would be much better for them to post it in the group, where everyone can enjoy it. It is considered foolish and marks you as a LAMER to even to ask for files by e-mail. It also takes away our anonymous status as posters. And think of it from your side, What if a nasty virus came attached. At least on the newsgroup, if there is a virus, someone else will probably find it and shout a warning to everyone; long before it gets to you!

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS NOW HAVE ONE SIMPLE ANSWER.

17. VCD FILES

Q: What are .vcd files and how do I work with them?
A: Some people will say that VCD stands for Video CDRom. However for our purposes we will refer to VCD as VIRTUAL CDROM To work with a VCD file you can do one of two things. If you have a burner, sometimes you can just change the .vcd to .iso. If simply changing the ext. from .vcd to .iso does not work then you can try using either CdMage or WinIso to do the conversion. Or if you like, you can simply open it with one of these and extract all the files to a temp dir then you can burn it from there. BE SURE TO USE the proper volume name! Almost all cd's posted here have a cd check so this will work okay. Also if you like, you can simply burn the vcd to a disk and then have the Virtual Drive Manager from a vcd program run it. This will help save valuable HD space.

If you do not have a burner, or if you chose to simply burn the vcd, you will need a Virtual CDRom program. There are several good ones available; Farstone's, Logitech, and Paragon are a few that I know of, Farstone's is included in the Newbie Starter Kit. Paragon's VCD is also available on the group. If you would like a copy, just ask for it (using the KISS format of course) and one of our regulars will post it for you as soon as they can.

18. NFO FILES

Q: What are .nfo files and how do I open them?
A: .nfo files contain related info about the program, such as install instructions or serial numbers, as well as information on the release groups and couriers who so graciously distribute the warez; people with access to 0-day (newly released) warez ftp sites, they post it to Usenet. These files can be viewed with notepad, quickview or any other text editor. Inside a zip, they can also be viewed with WinZip's Internal ASCII Text Viewer. Always check file_id.diz for info as well. For easy viewing, use the NFO program in the N.S.K. or create an association to notepad for .diz and .nfo files. These files can also be viewed inside of WINRAR or WINZIP with their internal ANSCII TEXT VIEWER. It is considered a courtesy to leave these files intact if you plan on posting the archives.

19. COMPRESSED ARCHIVES **(see personal note at the end of this section)**

Q: How do I decompress .zip files?
A: Get WinZip. The file you will get is a self-extracting archive. Setup is a snap. After downloading a .zip file, just double-click on it and it takes over all by itself. Or get Pkzip for DOS. Some people prefer to work with the DOS version. If you take the time to learn it, you will find that it is much more flexible.
Q: How do I decompress these .arj and .a01, .a02, etc. files?
A: Get Arj.exe. ARJ is not as easy to use as WinZip, but it is far more powerful.ARJ is typically used to split a large file into smaller pieces, making them easier to post. Don't use WinARJ, use plain old DOS ARJ (widely available; follow the link at the beginning of this answer). Open a DOS box in the directory where the .arj files are located (MS Powertoys Command Prompt is great for this under Win95).
Q: How do I decompress these .001, .002, .003, etc. files?
A: That depends. They could be either ARJ files (see above), RAR files(see below) or even JAR files (see below). Try ARJ first. If they don't decode, then try RAR. Some posters will tell you which format in the .nfo files or the 0/ file of the post.
Q: How do I decode these .rar, .r01, .r02, etc. files?
A: Get RAR (or more specifically, its companion program, unrar) or WinRAR. The procedure and commands are much the same as for ARJs. If there is no .rar file, use the lowest numbered extension. Also, remember that unrar.exe must be in your PATH or present in the directory (except for WinRAR which has icons for easy use).

**(PERSONAL NOTE**)
Since this FAQ was first put together, winrar has gone through several new releases. Ever since v2.7 winrar has been able to work with all of the compression formats we normally have here on the group. Winrar v2.8 is included in the NSK. IMHO for everyday use and eash of operation Winrar is the way to go.
**(END PERSONAL NOTE)** WOLFMAN

20. LARGE POSTS

Q: What is this day 1 of 6 stuff?
A: Usually means it's a very large program and the poster plans to post over a period of 6 days and this is the first day.

22.BROKEN MESSAGES

Q: I cannot get a complete message in one group. Can I join sections of the same message from two different groups?
A: Usually. If using Agent, try this: Create a new folder under 'Groups.' Call the new folder 'temp', 'scratch', or anything you'd like. Use the 'Manage Folder Menus' option to bring this new folder to the list. The list appears when you right click on a header. Then, simply retrieve the headers (simple retrieve, not launch or save Attachments) from the different groups, right click on them after you have retrieved them, and send them to your 'WORK' folder. You then can select them, right click, and select 'manually decode attachments' Be sure that you put them in the proper order. Note- this only works if they are in the same message or, frequently, a repost of the message by the same poster. If he/she has not changed the line length of the attachment section, it will generally work.

22.POSTS THAT MAKE NO SENSE

Q: What are all these meaningless combinations of letters I see in the articles?
A: There are two possible answers for this question. The first one is, if the first post in the series has an attachment (i.e. virt vix r01 1/5), but the following posts are nothing more than a bunch of meaningless letters and symbols (i.e. virt vix r01 2/5, 3/5,4/5,5/5). That is what a multi - part binary file looks like when it is loaded onto a newsgroup. Chances are you are using Outlook Express or a similar browser, if this is the case, you will have to use the message combine and decode function to put the parts back together again. (A better solution is to get "AGENT"- [included in the NSK] which will recombine the messages automatically.) The second possible answer is if you see a grouping of meaningless letters in an otherwise normal message that is a form of Internet Shorthand. Some common ones are:
TIA - thanks in advance
Plz - please
Thx - thanks
<g> - grin
<BG> - big grin
<BFG> - big fucking grin
RTFM - Read The Fucking Manual
FOAD - Fuck Off And Die
ESAD - Eat Shit And Die
WTMKF - Welcome To My Kill File
PLONK! - Person Leaving Our Newsgroup: Killfiled (you have been killfiled
PITA - Pain In The Ass
KUTGW - Keep Up The Good Work
BTW - By The Way
IMHO - In My Humble Opinion
LMAO - Laughing My Ass Off
ROTFLMAO - Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off
[Snip] - portions of the original message to which I'm replying, and
which are unrelated to my reply, have been deleted.

23. NON STANDARD FONTS

Q: iS it KewL tO Use fuNky TyPE or symbols in mY SubjECt liNES?
A: Not even close to cool. It is difficult to read and widely regarded as immature. For an example of a particularly poor header, someone once blessed us with: [| ; GT ]_]_ 3]\/[x Zg]. You are much more likely to get a response using standard type.

24 USING CAPITAL LETTERS

Q: IS ALL CAPS CONSIDERED OKAY?
A: NO. It is the Internet equivalent of SHOUTING. Use it sparingly.

25. ANARCHY

Q: The Internet is a total anarchy, right? So is it okay to use racial slurs or other patently offensive language?
A: NO. This group is devoted to software. Not race, politics, religion or sexual preferences, etc. Just software, Period! End of discussion! Subject closed! Take it somewhere else!

26. DO I HAVE TO?

Q: Do I have to follow all of these rules?
A: NO. No one owns the Internet and no rules are mandatory. However,
Newsgroups are based on a voluntary association. If you do not like the
people here, simply leave. If they do not like you, you will be ignored. If, however, you are an intelligent and reasonable person who wants to make the most out of the time spent here, you would be well advised to stay within the yellow lines. And by all means, BE PATIENT! (See Rule#1)

Remember!!!!

Have fun and follow the FAQ's. It's everybody's newsgroup and we all want to enjoy it, so it's up to everybody to keep it running smoothly.

If you enjoy a game you have downloaded, Please support the makers of the software by buying it or one of their other products. Not only will you get the registration perks of the game [i.e. tech support, new release info, peace of mind, etc.] but you will also be showing your appreciation For the hard work they have done to create it. A job well done is worth paying for!

And finally, Please be good people.
